Zalgo (unreadable text) Moderation

Keep messages readable and accessible.

Zalgo text or messages filled with excessive symbols and distorted characters, can make channels hard to read and uncomfortable for some members. Zalgo Moderation helps keep conversations clear by gently stepping in when text becomes unreadable.

This feature focuses on readability and accessibility, not punishment.

Note: Ban Actions

Automatic bans are currently not supported by Discord auto moderation. At this time, Discord does not allow auto moderation rules to directly ban members.

If this policy changes in the future, Mochi will be updated to support it where appropriate.

🌸 What Zalgo Moderation Does

When enabled, Mochi watches for messages that contain excessive combining characters or distorted text patterns (often called “zalgo”).

If detected, Mochi responds based on the options you choose.

You control:

  • What action is taken

  • How long it lasts

  • Where the rule applies

  • Who the rule applies to

⚙️ Anti-Zalgo Options

Zalgo moderation follows the same simple structure as Mochi’s other auto moderation tools, with added control over timeout duration.

⏳ Timeout Member

Temporarily restricts a member from sending messages when unreadable text is detected.

You can choose how long the timeout lasts:

  • 60 seconds

  • 5 minutes

  • 10 minutes

  • 1 hour

  • 1 day

  • 1 week

This allows you to match the response to your server’s tone — from gentle reminders to stronger cooldowns.

💬 Custom Message

Send a friendly message explaining what happened.

Example:

“That message was a bit hard to read — let’s keep things clear for everyone 😊”

Clear explanations help members understand the rule without confusion.

🚨 Send Alert

When enabled, Mochi sends an alert whenever Zalgo moderation is triggered.

Turning this on unlocks:

📌 Logging Channel

Select the channel where Zalgo moderation alerts should be sent. This keeps moderators informed without needing to monitor every channel manually.

🚫 Ignored Channels

Choose channels where Zalgo moderation should not apply.

Useful for:

  • Creative or experimental text channels

  • Meme or roleplay spaces

  • Staff-only areas

Messages in ignored channels will not trigger Zalgo moderation.

🎭 Allowed Roles

Select roles that are exempt from Zalgo moderation.

Members with these roles can use distorted text freely without triggering moderation. Helpful for:

  • Moderators and staff

  • Event hosts

  • Creative roles

🌱 Best Practices

  • Use short timeouts for first-time triggers

  • Pair moderation with clear custom messages

  • Exclude creative channels if needed

  • Enable alerts if moderation context matters

  • Adjust duration based on community behavior

Zalgo moderation works best when it protects readability without limiting creativity.

✨ Why It Matters

Unreadable text can:

  • Break conversation flow

  • Hurt accessibility

  • Overwhelm chat visually

Zalgo Moderation keeps your server welcoming, readable, and inclusive — automatically and calmly.
